Professor Leony Ortiz (Y’1982) received both B.S. and M.Sc. degrees in Automation Engineering from the Instituto Superior Politécnico Julio Antonio Mella (ISPJAM) from the Universidad de Oriente, Cuba; an additional M.Sc. degree in Engineering from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, in Medellín, Colombia; and is a Ph.D in Engineering from the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. He is currently serving as a full professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, in Quito, Ecuador and is an active member of the smart grids research GIREI Group in Ecuador.

His main line of research is the Systems Identification, Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Control applied to Smart Microgrids. Professor Ortiz has been a coordinator and researcher of various research projects developed at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana and currently coordinates the project “Resilient systems for hierarchical control of AC / DC Hybrid Microgrid based on fault  detection and tolerance strategies”, 2021.

Internationally, he is an invited collaborator for the prestigious Colombian research program “Energética 2030”. He is the author and reviewer of various scientific papers for high-impact national and international journals and conferences. Additionally, he collaborated as a reviewer and committee member of various international events and conferences. In 2010, he was involved in community work as a member of the Cuban medical brigade during the massive earthquake in Haiti.
